Obsolete Technology……. Panasonic DVC20p (Linear Technology)
In the early days of electronic video production, linear (tape-to-tape) capture along with editing was the only way to capture footage and edit video tapes. Then, in the 1990s, non-linear camcorders along with editing computers became available and opened a whole new world of editing power and efficiency. Non-linear editing was not welcomed by everyone and many editors resisted the new wave. In addition, early digital video was plagued with performance issues and uncertainty. However, the overwhelming advantages of non-linear video eventually became so irresistible that they could not be disregarded. In the 21st Century non-linear technology has gained supremacy and linear technology has taken its place in obsolescence. During this time the description "non-linear" was slowly abandoned as it was no longer necessary—almost all editing was now digital and the "non-linear" aspect was assumed. Linear is no longer an option as it pertains to video capture and post-production. Enhancement The Panasonic DVC 20p provides professional grade video quality at an affordable price and use if smaller linear technology. Obsolete The Hi 8 camcorder was the primary means for video capture up until this point. Retrieval This technology resembled beta and VHS technologies, just smaller and more compact Reversal Will be replaced by streamlined technology that has multipurpose capabilities “Emerging and emerged technology”……..iPad Air 2 (Non-linear technology) Enhances * disabled people can use it to communicate with less energy than a mouse. * Social networking easier than a Smartphone * e- book reader * potable documents * Contacts and info readily available * Will not have to worry about a phone call interrupting Obsoletes: * laptops (for web browsing/ checking e-mails) * college textbooks * Newspapers * Magazines Retrieves: * iPods * Smartphone apps * Palm Pilot Reverses: * larger tablets that will do everything that a computer does * every brand will carry some type of tablet * run off networks like phones rather than a home internet service (WiFi) Slowly but surely, small scale and in some cases larger budget productions, educational environments and corporate solutions are now being transformed through the use of a device as simply as an iPad Air2. As many of you are aware, video production is divided into phases that have critical steps that must be executed to complete a video package. These steps are in the pre-production, production and post-productions phases. Well, with our obsolete technology (Panasonic DVC20p) only one phase could be performed and that was the production/ filming stage. With this in mind, iPad Air2 has emerged as a solution that is capable of carrying on tasks from a myriad of production perspectives. Here is a list of functions, the iPad Air can do, thus making it a valuable replacement for what existed in the past. · 1. Screenwriting · 2. Storyboarding Once you have finished your screenplay, it’s time to start planning your shots, and the new iPad can help you create great-looking storyboards. There are a number of established storyboarding applications, such as Storyboard Composer HD by Cinemek Inc., or Storyboards by Tamajii Inc. These apps let you take the pictures you may have taken while location scouting and add clip art, camera movements and more to generate detailed storyboards. If you want draw the storyboards by hand, the new iPad can also make a great paper replacement · 3. As a Film Slate Film Slates are an old but essential accessory on any shoot; just ask any editor who has tried to edit a large project without using one. They display valuable information about the scene and make syncing external sound a breeze. They usually involve chalk or a dry erase marker, but with the new iPad you digitize the slate process. · 4. As a Teleprompter The large bright screen and long battery life of the new iPad also makes it ideal to use as a portable teleprompter. · 5. As a field camcorder · 6. As a Light……The new iPad’s exceptionally bright display can work surprisingly well as a light source. The relatively large surface area casts a diffused light that can work well as a key or fill light in tight shots. · 7. As a post-production hub (Final Cut Pro X) This template is one of the elite editing software(s) that is respected and used by industry professionals. Based on my comprehension of the term emerging technology, my assertion towards this term or concept suggest that I agree with Rogers (2003) due to the fact his definition is directly tied into the people who are going to benefit from the technology. From my years of experience, innovations are nice and most definitely needed but when you have a community that is excited about it, you have that “buy in” and adoption that really takes a technology to the next level. Change is difficult, but when a community embraces it, things can become really special. Thornburg so eloquently stated, “The constantly changing landscape of educational technology can be thought of as a series of transitions from older tools to newer ones – although some of the newer tools had their genesis years ago and are just now coming into mainstream awareness” (Thornburg, D. D, 2009a). Bearing this in mind, the greatest challenges associated with this technology are making it available to all students within our district. In addition to this, my district (Fulton County Board of Education) has been in a contract with Dell (Microsoft) therefore they have been prohibited from using Apple products. Therefore, the instructors who use Apple products are not supported for maintenance, repairs and other service needs. Mac Ipads (Air) have become the latest and greatest means to deliver instruction and link the instructor and students in an educational realm that can expand with the traditional parameters of teaching and learning. The educational landscape is transforming and media driven methods of instruction are currently the most impactful method of delivering the curriculum to our students. It allows learners to become actively engaged in their learning. This benefits all involved! With my years of experience in public education, I’m not confident this could be achieved without a monumental waste of tax dollars. References: Thornburg, D. D. (2009a).
