An area in which my coworkers are struggling to transition into is the constant use of technology as it pertains to teaching and engaging students in their activities. Many of my co-workers have 20+ years of educational experiences and find it challenging to merge “old school” knowledge with ever changing technology. Like we all do, they are stuck in the past and are not willing to move forward with the numerous innovations available to them that the students will positively respond to. To get my coworkers up to speed, I would base their training on Schema Theory which “combines background knowledge with information on text” (Zhao & Zhu, 2012, p. 111). This scenario would allow our veteran teachers, who are experts in their content areas, to opportunity to get involved with emerging technologies in such a well they could use their wealth of knowledge in a forum that is engaging to learners. For example, blogs, discussion boards and other forms of social media are great visual aids, learning tools and resources that will benefit everyone involved. Another great method that will help facilitate diversity and globalization in the workplace is the act of sharing knowledge with a member of the learner community (student) who is well-versed in some of the cutting edge technologies that exist in the marketplace. As much as I teach my students about broadcasting from a business perspective, they are equally as helpful introducing newer technologies to me and how they are helpful in capturing their peer’s attention. This exchange of knowledge has allowed the old school to merge with the new school where both are benefiting from a wealth of knowledge each one has to provide.
